More marriages from Perry, IN. This is from a letter. The author recorded this information "out of my marriages book". I don't know what marriage book it came from, but most of these Johnson's I don't know if they fit into my family line or not . . .
Eliza J. Johnson & James Bolin, 5 Nov 1851
Daniel Blain & Polly Johnson, 7 Feb 1825
Isaac Johnson & Nancy T. Jones, 2 Nov 1835
John Marshall & Elizabeth Johnson, 24 Mar 1839
William B. Wilson & Ellen Johnson, 31 Mar 1842
John L. Johnson & Abigail Cutler, 30 Jul 1846
Interesting note: I really haven't studied this Johnson line much . . . but in this letter Ms. Browning states "I have several little booklets of Marriages from Virginia. In one of these is "Matthew Johnson and Mary Mantle, married 24 Oct 1787 in Goochland County, Virginia (Marriage Bond) . . " Now, I'm sure there are millions of Matthew Johnsons around, and I haven't studied enough of them to know where they were before Hardin Co., Kentucky. But it's worth noting and possibly looking into in the future.

Before Hardin Co, KY?
From Loretta regarding a letter written to her by Walter Melton, a descendant of Mary Ann Lasswell Melton Johnson McLaughlin, of Knoxville, Tenn:
"He thinks that Matthew may have been in Madison Co., before he came to Hardin since the Meltons and Laswells were there about 1800. He stated at settlement of estate of John Melton in addition to Matthew Johnston there was also a Joseph Johnston, setted 15 Jan 1815. He also feels JohnsTon is the original name. He said Laswells were loyalists who came from Maryland to North Carolina than to Kentucky through Virginia. "

Dorthea Ann Johnson, b 1812
Dorthea Ann Johnson b abt 1812 in Washington, KY has always intrigued me (my gggg grandmother). She married a James Samuel Elder, but we have never been able to figure out her parents. This Dorthea is found on my gg grandmother's line. However, we have another Dorthea Johnson found on my gg grandfather's line (sister of my gg grandfather). I've always thought they must somehow be related since Dorthea isn't too common of a name, even at that time. Today I found a clue!!
Thanks to some information I was given by Jerry Clark I filled in a little more of the Johnson Pedigree. Matthew Johnson had two brothers, John and Thomas. Thomas had a daughter named Mary who married a Thomas Foster.
Today as I was continuing to sort through my grandmother's information I came across a letter with cemetery and baptism records of several Elders and Johnsons. I came across this information, researched by Loretta in 1979:
"These are baptisms from Derby & Leopold:
Nov 1 1840 - Promiliana d/o Samuel James Elder & Dorthea Ann Elder b. 24 Sept 1840. Godfather Thomas Foster and Godmother Mary Ann Foster"
I think it would be very probable that Dorthea would have named her "sister", Mary Johnson Foster, daughter of Thomas Johnson and neice to Matthew Johnson, godmother. This is only a hunch but now I can look to see if there's any proof of this.
Since we think Dorthea was born around 1812, Thomas Johnson would have only been 38 at the time of her birth. I will have to look into this more. If anyone has information to prove this please comment or e-mail me.

Benjamin Johnson, possible son of Matthew?
From a letter written to my grandmother (185):
"Last week I spent an afternoon at the Perry Co. Courthouse. I feel sure Benjamin L. Johnson is the same as Benjamin Lasswell Johnson who also bought land from the US. I feel sure he is a son of Matthew Johnson and Mary Ann Lasswell Milton Johnson. The Eli Milton was her son. Benjamin L. Johnson married Rebecca Marshall June 7, 1837. Eli Milton married Phebe Marshall May 4, 1837. They were probably sisters.
Benjamin sold land 10 Oct 1839 and 18 March 1843.
I checked the index for a Benjamin Johnson in 1850 and could not find any in Warrick or Perry Co. By 1850 his mother was living in Warrick Co. Tell City Library has a card index on the 1880 census but I could not find him there either. If we could locate him and see where he says his father was born it sure would help us.
Also, Ignatius and William Johnson were witnesses on a deed of my William Mitchell.
The estate of Ignatius Johnson lists children: Henry M., Daniel V., Elizabeth D.A., Sarah R., Mary E. and William I. Johnson. 11 Nov 1844 Elijah Huckeby appointed guardian of children."
